Montauk, Surf Fishing & Stripers Online

What he loved to do - Making fishing lures

Awesome John is one of the "'Fishing Legends of Montauk, New York". An avid angler who loved surf fishing and everything to do with Montauk, he was featured on Animal Planet's TV Series "Off The Hook-Extreme Catches: Skishing Hell Week" with pro wrestler Eric Young.

He was a master craftman of lures and jigs who made videos about how to make and use lures. He loved fishing on the surf, especially at night in Montauk, and fighting the elements to catch a huge striped bass. He had an extensive collection of fishing gear.

Awesome John was an active forum guest on Stripers Online and cherished the community that he was closely attached to and active in.  Since Awesome John's passing, there has been a heartfelt outpour of love from hundreds of SOL members. Awesome, left a special place in people's hearts -- many had never met him but knew he shined in a special way.

A collection of condolences and expressions of love, many from people who only knew Awesome John from online forums, is a true testiment to what an amazing spirit Awesome John had and how he was able to touch hearts.

We thank all of SOL friends who left their kind condolences on the forum for their love and for enriching our brother's life through their friendship.

Stripers online

— Roadrunner, SOL

I never met the guy, and never knew the guy. But from what I read here, I wish that I had. :o Gone too soon, but if there is another realm, I hope there is fishing there. Sounds like he earned it.”

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.  - John Walter Wayland (Thank you Dave!)
